Downtown and Neighborhood Revitalization
On December 8, 2009, Mayor Becker successfully worked with the Salt Lake City Council to “Normalize” Salt Lake City’s Alcohol Policy by lifting the “two-per-block-face” restriction on alcohol establishments.
Mayor Becker has actively worked with Salt Lake County designate nearly $500,000 annually for cultural activities downtown, made significant progress towards building the Utah Performance Center on Main, and actively supported the Leonardo, expected to open in April 2011. Mayor Becker has also advocated for neighborhood businesses, including making changes to residential mixed-use and mixed-use zones, launch a small business initiative, hosting Salt Lake’s first neighborhood business conference, creating the small business liaison position, developing the Neighborhood Business Matching Grant Program, and completing a Community Housing Plan, with specific objectives and goals for increasing vitality within our City’s neighborhoods.
Finally, Mayor Becker has pushed for development and revitalization on the City’s Westside with the North Temple reconstruction, improvements to the Jordan River Trail, advancing on the Athletic Complex, and heavily funding a multitude of improvements through the Community Development Block Grant Program.
