Protection of Salt Lake City's LGBT Individuals
In his first official act as Mayor, Ralph Becker proposed Utah’s first domestic partnership registry, now termed the Mutual Commitment Registry. The registry allows individuals with deep personal relationships to receive a certificate attesting to their domestic partner status.
Less than two years later and with the backing of the LDS Church, the Salt Lake City Council adopted Mayor Becker’s proposal for a Non-Discrimination Ordinance, protecting LGBT individual from discrimination in housing and employment. Following its passage, nine other local governments have followed Mayor Becker’s lead and adopted similar ordinances.
