It was dark and cold this morning as I jumped out of my car at Liberty Park and hurried over to the small crowd gathered on the corner of 7th East and 13th South. They were waving large yellow Becker for Mayor signs at the cars driving by, carrying the morning’s first commuters to work. I joined them, picking up a sign and trying to overcome the piercing cold by waving my sign at the sleepy commuters with extra vigor.
The few drivers alert enough to take notice of us honked their encouragement and support to the fifteen of us as we began to wake up. Before too long, the stereo, which thus far had been powerless, was fitted with fresh batteries and a CD mix of disco music. Coffee arrived shortly thereafter and by the time the rush hour had started in earnest, there was a veritable dance party occurring at the corner of Liberty Park.
Once small events like this get going, they are truly a thrill to participate in. After hours of work at campaign HQ, in which one becomes steadily more stir crazy, nothing blows off steam, reinvigorates one’s efforts, or reminds one of why they joined the campaign in the first place more than an enthusiastic honk and wave.
This morning, we were witness to some surprising and impressive dance moves from David, our campaign manager, and Will from Equality Utah. The number of honks and cheers from passing cars was inspiring and reinforced my belief that the people of Salt Lake City support Ralph Becker and will elect him as the next mayor of this great American city. I look forward to the next honk and wave and hope that the turnout continues to be as good and enthusiastic as it was this morning.
